Peake's Presumption, or, The Fate of Frankenstein

Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1818) inspired numerous theatrical adaptations throughout the nineteenth century. The first of these, Richard Brinsely Peake's Presumption, or, The Fate of Frankenstein (1823), set the stage for the increasingly popular story, and influenced its evolution in the adaptations and appropriations that followed. These adaptations led to a considerable increase in the popularity of Shelley's novel and its readership.
